So it was this week and we were fortunate to get good looks at such critters as Painted Lady (which far outnumbered American Lady), Sachem, Salt Marsh Skipper and Zabulon Skipper. Also seen were Eastern Tiger, Spicebush and Black Swallowtails, Common Buckeye, Eastern Tailed-Blue, and both hummingbird moths: Hummingbird Clearwing and Snowberry Clearwing. Cox Hall Creek WMA had a nice variety of 'nice' birds this morning. In addition to the ever-present Eastern Bluebirds and Chipping Sparrows were singing Blue Grosbeaks and Indigo Buntings, several Pine Warblers, American Redstarts, and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers. Many Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are passing through on migration now and several feisty ones were seen chasing each other, titmice and even a Blue Grosbeak. The weather gods again favored us by ending the fairly heavy rain about 30 minutes before our starting time! The lesson of today's walk was that sometimes it is best to just find a nice place and let the birds come to you. We found a convenient patch of Poke Berry with a nice perch nearby and were rewarded with a nice variety of birds, including American Goldfinch, Cedar Waxwing, Great Crested Flycatcher, Northern Mockingbird, and Yellow-breasted Chat. The goldfinch were eating thistle seeds, the flycatcher was using the Poke Berry as a perch from which it sallied out after passing insects, while the others dined on the berries.

We started out quiet as rain pulled away, but there were a few areas where small groups of birds were present. Ovenbird and Northern Waterthrush were in the first wet woods, feeding on the ground. Nice looks at both Orioles, and what appeared to be a family of 4-5 Blue Grosbeaks. Thirteen Wood Ducks, both male and female not in breeding plumage, were a surprise on the willow pond. Another nice evening at the South Cape May Meadows. Lots of shorebirds although most were Semipalmated Plovers. There were also some Semipalmated Sandpipers, both Yellowlegs, Killdeer, and American Oystercatchers. Least Terns are still around but numbers are lessening. Generally quiet but in several areas there were small flocks of passerines. Warblers included many Redstarts, Black and Whites, Blue-winged, Canada, and Ovenbird. Butterfly Walk at Goshen - Thursday, August 16th, 2012
The weather for this Thursday's mid morning walk was delightful, and the butterflies put on a good display including a couple Salt Marsh Skippers. However, it was other critters who stole the show. Hummingbird moths were all over the place, and afforded us good looks at both species (Hummingbird Clearwing and Snowberry Clearwing). Birding Cape May Point - Wednesday, August 15th, 2012
Lots of birds on Bunker Pond and the beach, so we spent the whole walk studying and enjoying them. Several of interest were the continuing juvenile Gull-billed Tern, several juvenile Common and Forster's Terns, and a juvenile and adult Black Tern. Two Little Blue Herons and a Snowy Egret provided a nice comparison. Also seen was the first of the year juvenile Short-billed Dowitcher, and a White-rumped Sandpiper. It was deceptively quiet starting out on this morning's walk. It soon became evident, though, that many breeding birds as well as early migrants are making use of this still-evolving (from a golf course) habitat. Blue Grosbeaks, Indigo Buntings, Bluebirds and Chipping Sparrows were numerous throughout in various stages of molt. Warblers included Yellow-throated, Yellow, Pine, Ovenbird and Common Yellowthroat. Several Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers were seen as well. Leaders: Kathy & Roger Horn, Chuck & Mary Jane Slugg, Steve Weis, and Janet Crawford.

Photo Walks with Mike Hannisian - Saturday, August 11th, 2012
We were fortunate this Saturday in that the much needed rains held off until the afternoon. As expected, Bunker Pond had its share of terns with Forster's and Common predominating. Likewise, with the low water level, herons and egrets were present and offered nice photo opportunities. However, our first stop was to shoot a group of wasps on the end of a dead twig. I do not know what they were doing, but it was reminiscent of a group of males that have just found a fertile female. But the photo bird of the day was an adult Tree Swallow that posed for so long that it was still there when we left!

Birding Cape May Point - August 11th, 2012
Because it was quiet at the Rea Farm, we moved the Fall Migrants at the Rea Farm walk to Cape May Point State Park where we had lots of terns, waders and shorebirds to look at and study. Many scope views of 4 species of terns in both basic, alternate, and juvenile plumage, many times in one field of view. Nice close look at juvenile Little Blue Heron and just to make things interesting and scatter all the birds, a fly-over pass by a Peregrine Falcon and later a Cooper's Hawk.
