Birding Cumberland - Sunday, November 14 2010

"With calm winds, mild weather and great birds, Birding Cumberland was a success. We tallied 19 Bald Eagles, and interestingly enough, 100% of them were Adults, with no sub-adults being spotted the whole day. We had quite a variety of waterfowl from female Black Scoters at Seabreeze, to Buffleheads galore at Heislerville, and a vast amount of Green-winged Teal scattered throughout the marshes of the Delaware Bayshore. We finished this splendid walk with 9 Sandhill Cranes bugling in the marshes of Husted Landing."

Cape May Point - Wednesday, November 10, 2010

But for a great selection of ducks (including the first returning Buffleheads and Hooded Mergansers for our Wednesday walks) there was little to really appreciate on the ground; but all the action was overhead as waves of American Robins, American Pipits, American Goldfinches (don't we need some more imaginative bird names?!!), Pine Siskins, Red-winged Blackbirds and Eastern Bluebirds poured overhead. Karl pulled a Cave Swallow out of a pack of Tree Swallows and a Red-throated Loon was close enough in to appreciate.

South Cape May Meadows - Monday, November 8, 2010

Dave Lord et. al. report

"Today was the penultimate walk at the Meadows, and though we were fighting 40 mph gust for most of the walk, everyone went away happy. From the parking lot we had a Cooper's Hawk harassing a Sharp-shin, and plenty of Black Vultures up before the sun. On the beach, we had wonderful views of American Pipits, two adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and a crippling sighting of a Snow Bunting. Other highlights include a Cave Swallow and a distant Fox Sparrow flyby."

Cape May Point - Wednesday, November 3, 2010

After all the madness of the huge fall of migrants over the weekend, today's walk felt very quiet, yet we totalled 69 species! Ducks did us proud, especially the two Eurasian Wigeon and an unexpected White-winged Scoter off St Mary's. The leucisitc (very pale!) Red-tailed Hawk showed well and we had a close encounter with a Tundra Swan who seemed to be hiding from the Mute Swan bullies.

Location: Cape Island--Cape May Pt.
Observation date: 11/3/10
Number of species: 69

Fine views were had of Red-tailed Hawks on the morning walk today, including this bird by the Plover Ponds (note the band)....

....and this one in the back woods, right by the trail.

A lone Tundra Swan was seen at two different locations during our walk; here at the Plover Ponds. [Photos by Karl Lukens]

Cape May Autumn Weekend Cumulative List - Cape May County, Mainly Cape Island, Friday, October 29 Through Sunday, October 31, 2010

[The dog ate my checklist. This is is not a staged photo.  My Chessie pup Daniel Boone took exception to me tracking down an interesting call note in the yard (turned out to be White-crowned Sparrow), came in the dog door and decided the checklist I was working on was just too absurdedly long to be true.]

Kathy and Roger Horn et. al. report:
Location:     Villas WMA
Observation date:     10/24/10
Notes:     Most of the birds seen at the Villas WMA this morning were busy feeding in  native plants that have re-populated the grounds of this former golf course. Sparrows were abundant, with lots of songs, along with white-crowned and white-throated,savannah, field, chipping and swamp. An orange-crowned warbler was feeding amidst the asters, both kinglet species were present in good voice, and a merlin perched long enough for everyone to get a scope view.

Sunset Birding at Stone Harbor Point - Tuesday, October 19 2010

Location: Stone Harbor Point
Observation date: 10/19/10
Notes: Sunset Birding at Stone Harbor Walk led by Mike F,Jim A,and Warren C. We spent the entire walk along Stone Harbor Point today because it was high tide and loaded with birds. The beach held over a hundred Red Knot, an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, and some newly arrived Dunlin among the shorebirds and we had a bonus of pods of Bottlenose Dolphins frolicking just past the Surf. There was a very cooperative Red-throated Loon close in by the Jetty and even a Peregrine Falcon ON the beach. Scoter were streaming by offshore. We spotted a Brown Pelican on a sandbar covered with Cormorants just before the high tide forced them elsewhere. Lots of feeding Terns rounded out our day. We even had a male Black-throated Blue Warbler came flying in off the ocean into the dunes. We ended the walk with a pair of Merlin Perched on snags.

Cape May Point - Wednesday, October 20, 2010

A bit of a strange bird list this week as we ran out of time and didn't complete the usual circuit - so we missed all the ducks on Lighthouse Pond; partly due to rain, but also partly due to the fact that there was just so many migrants passing over first thing.

A little bunch of sparrows at the parking lot included some smart White-crowned Sparrows and a brief Clay-colored Sparrow, Surf and Black Scoters scooted by offshore and all the while, great droves of Yellow-rumped Warblers moved through in waves. At the start of the Blue Trail, we struggled to pick out a couple of Pine Siskins, lurking in an oak tree as the rain started; then the birds flew out and suddenly there was a flock of about 40 Pine Siskins feeding on Giant Sunflower seed.

Back Bay Birding By Boat on the Osprey - Monday, October 19 2010

Dave Lord reports:

"Loons have finally made it to the Osprey! After weeks of desperate scanning, 2 Common Loons showed themselves to the delight of all. Then a Red-throated Loon popped up right next to them for a crippling comparison. Other interesting waterbird notes include a female Surf Scoter hanging with a group of Ruddy Ducks in Cape May Harbor. The Raptor Show continues with many Northern Harriers, a Red-tailed Hawk and multiple Bald Eagles. A great time out on the water."
