Birding the Meadows with Pete Dunne - Monday, November 25th, 2013

Very cold and breezy. Most of the ponds were iced over. A few spots with ducks which included Mallard, Gadwall, American Wigeon, Green-winged Teal, and a couple of Ruddy, one Ring-necked, and one Bufflehead. We also had several "disgruntled" Great Blue Herons. A few of the usual gulls on the beach and one Lesser Black-backed Gull. There were a few fly-over Snow Bunting but no large feeding flock. Highlight was a brief look at a Short-eared Owl that landed in the dunes and could not be relocated. Still thawing out as this is written! Leaders: Pete Dunne, Karl Lukens, Chuck Slugg, Steve Weis, Janet Crawford, Catherine Busch, and Mike Hanissian.

Cox Hall Creek WMA - Sunday, November 10th, 2013

The winter blackbird flocks are back at Cox Hall Creek WMA and among the mix once again are Rusty Blackbirds; several sat up in bare branches, providing good views of both males and females. Their fresh feathers with the light-gilded edges that will wear off, giving way to their spring breeding plumage, could be seen well in the group's scopes. Lots of sparrows - including two first-of-season Fox Sparrows - bluebirds, towhees and, of course, yellow-rumps, can be seen throughout the property.
