Maurice River Bald Eagle Cruise - Sunday, April 6th, 2014

There were more Bald Eagles feeding eaglets in their nests, as well as many Rough-winged Swallows hunting the river. The Double-crested Cormorants were in high breeding plumage, and great amounts of Green-winged Teal were still found on the river. The highlight would have to be the Red-necked Grebe we found further down the river toward Mauricetown. Leaders: Dave Lord and Mary Watkins.

Higbee Beach Bird Walk - Friday, April 4th, 2014

A chilly and blustery Higbee Beach was not overly inviting this morning, but this is Cape May and the birds were there to be found! A Yellow-bellied Sapsucker eventually settled for all to get good views and three Eastern Phoebes were early migrants in the fields, but the beach and bay produced the best activity today. A Piping Plover was a nice surprise on the beach, two Horned Grebes included a nice close bird that was almost in full breeding plumage and we witnessed Great Egrets and a Great Blue Heron struggling in right over our heads. Bonaparte's Gulls still hung out at the jetty and displaying Red-breasted Mergansers were a treat to watch. Leaders: Mike Crewe, Chris Marks, Catherine Busch, and Mary Watkins.

Not so nice weather, but good birding. Still a good variety of ducks, five species of gulls, and at least three FOY (first of year) birds for many. Several groups of Wilson's Snipe flying over were nice to see. Leaders: Pete Dunne, Karl Lukens, Chuck Slugg, Steve Weis, Janet Crawford, Warren Cairo, and Mike Hannisian.

Nightfall at Corbin City - Sunday, March 9th, 2014

The Corbin City walk was relocated to Jake's Landing and Stipson's Island for the fact that Tuckahoe/Corbin City WMA are stilled closed. The usual suspects for early March were present; Great-horned Owls were hooting everywhere, Woodcocks were "peenting" to their heart's content, and Northern Harriers were cruising the marshes. Leaders: Karen Johnson, Chris Marks, and Dave Lord.

Winter Evening at the Meadows - Friday, February 21st, 2014

A rainy, breezy, evening with the threat of thunder storms but we did manage to find a nice variety of ducks. Also six peenting American Woodcocks and saw one. The surprise however, was when Shaun said there is something across the way that looks like that Murre at Wildwood. We immediately got on it an with the scope said "that's a Dovekie"!! And it was, giving us good looks as sunset and the dark cloudy sky took away our light. Leaders: Karl Lukens, Kathy Horn, Shaun and Cindy Bamford.

Birding Cape May Point - Saturday, February 1st, 2014

A "mild" 25 degrees to start and with no wind. With frozen ponds water fowl are scarce, but some open water on Lily Lake produced Gadwall, Mallard, Northern Shovelers, Ring-necked Ducks, a couple of American Coots and a bright drake Eurasian Wigeon. Close by the Coral Ave. jetty were a Black and Surf Scoter and two White-winged Scoters. Other birds of interest were a "strutting" American Woodcock, and an Eastern Towhee. We finished at the parking lot with a good look at an adult male Northern Harrier (Gray Ghost). Leaders: Karl Lukens, Steve Weis, Warren Cairo, Catherine Busch, and Chris Marks.
