Cape May Point - Wednesday, October 27, 2010
This was a strange walk as the threat of rain and gusty SW winds kept migrants to a minimum. Even so, we enjoyed a good passage of Northern Gannets, Royal Terns and scoter offshore, two Peregrines sat and sulked on the beach and Lighthouse Pond did us proud with a great range of ducks.

Sunset Birding at Stone Harbor Point - Tuesday, October 19 2010
Location: Stone Harbor Point
Observation date: 10/19/10
Notes: Sunset Birding at Stone Harbor Walk led by Mike F,Jim A,and Warren C. We spent the entire walk along Stone Harbor Point today because it was high tide and loaded with birds. The beach held over a hundred Red Knot, an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull, and some newly arrived Dunlin among the shorebirds and we had a bonus of pods of Bottlenose Dolphins frolicking just past the Surf. There was a very cooperative Red-throated Loon close in by the Jetty and even a Peregrine Falcon ON the beach. Scoter were streaming by offshore. We spotted a Brown Pelican on a sandbar covered with Cormorants just before the high tide forced them elsewhere. Lots of feeding Terns rounded out our day. We even had a male Black-throated Blue Warbler came flying in off the ocean into the dunes. We ended the walk with a pair of Merlin Perched on snags.

Cape May Point - Wednesday, October 20, 2010
A bit of a strange bird list this week as we ran out of time and didn't complete the usual circuit - so we missed all the ducks on Lighthouse Pond; partly due to rain, but also partly due to the fact that there was just so many migrants passing over first thing.
A little bunch of sparrows at the parking lot included some smart White-crowned Sparrows and a brief Clay-colored Sparrow, Surf and Black Scoters scooted by offshore and all the while, great droves of Yellow-rumped Warblers moved through in waves. At the start of the Blue Trail, we struggled to pick out a couple of Pine Siskins, lurking in an oak tree as the rain started; then the birds flew out and suddenly there was a flock of about 40 Pine Siskins feeding on Giant Sunflower seed.

Back Bay Birding By Boat on the Osprey - Monday, October 19 2010
Dave Lord reports:
"Loons have finally made it to the Osprey! After weeks of desperate scanning, 2 Common Loons showed themselves to the delight of all. Then a Red-throated Loon popped up right next to them for a crippling comparison. Other interesting waterbird notes include a female Surf Scoter hanging with a group of Ruddy Ducks in Cape May Harbor. The Raptor Show continues with many Northern Harriers, a Red-tailed Hawk and multiple Bald Eagles. A great time out on the water."

Villas WMA - Sunday, October 10 2010
Location: Villas WMA
Observation date: 10/10/10
Notes: Passerines were watching out for their lives at this morning's Villas WMA walk as the good hawk flight of the weekend continued. Rusty blackbirds are back, amidst large flocks of grackles and red-winged blackbirds. And there was no getting away from the constant 'ank, ank' of red-breasted nuthatches in the pine canopies. Yellow-breasted sapsuckers were heard more frequently than seen but the one eating a persimmon put on a good show!(Sunny, low-60's)

Sunset Cruise on the Osprey - Saturday, October 9 2010
"Today's special four hour trip aboard the Osprey was very productive, especially in the raptor department. We had a good number of Bald Eagles before we even out of the dock one of which did us a favor by sitting in the marsh for close inspection. We also swept the falcons, something we haven't done before. Other highlights include huge aggregations of Black-Bellied Plovers and Oystercatchers, as well as crowd-pleasing views of numerous Black-crowned Night-herons, which said goodnight to us in the light of a beautiful sunset (Will Kerling, Chris Tonkison, Dave Lord)."

Cape May Point State Park - Wednesday, September 06, 2010
An end to the rain, but with south-west winds still holding sway, things were a little quiet at first. Shorebirds are mostly gone now, but ducks replace them on the deepening ponds, while sparrows are replacing warblers in the marsh. Some nice parties of Swamp Sparrows today and a good raptor migration building up. Red-bellied Woodpeckers and Blue Jays moving too. Karl was shapr to spot two Lesser Black-backed Gulls a split second before they decided to leave!
