Back Bay Birding By Boat - Monday, August 29, 2010

Dave Lord tells us: "Back Bay Birding by Boat hit it out of the park today; not only with good birds but with spectacle thrown in as well. The spectacle and the good birds started in the harbor where nearly one thousand Tree Swallows swarmed over the boat, then came the good birds when four Brown Pelicans flew by in the distance. Birds seemed to want to sit together a lot on this trip, as we had eight American Oystercatchers in one spot, and huge flocks of egrets, mainly of the Great variety. Other highlights include the seven Tricolored Herons, three of which were Juveniles."

Cape May Point - Wednesday, August 25, 2010

With water levels now well up in the pools, shorebirds were far less numerous than on the last couple of Wednesday walks, but there was still enough to keep our attention for a while. Migrants were certainly moving overhead but few landed for us to enjoy to the full, though the season first Magnolia Warbler was a nice find and two Tricolored Herons were a tricolored treat! A few Cliff Swallows were with the gathering of Tree, Barn and Bank Swallows along the dune ridge and all showed very well. A number of Monarchs passed us by, all heading in the same direction and I certainly got the feeling that their southbound migration was getting started.

South Cape May Meadows - Monday, August 23, 2010

Karl Lukens reports:

"CMBO Birding the Meadows with Pete Dunne. High water due to recent rains caused mudflats and edges to disappear and thus less shorebirds. ducks were good with both Blue- and Green-winged Teal present. The Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks were not present for the walk but appeared about 45 min. later and this time there were 4!! along with 3 Broad-winged Hawks overhead. Usual suspects on the beach with many Semi-palmated Plover and a report of a Piping Plover probably the last of the fledged birds on this beach."

Evening at the Meadows - Friday, August 20 2010

[Yellow-headed Blackbird by Karl Lukens, last night at the meadows.]

[Sora last night at the meadows by Karl Lukens. Originally detected by Tom Johnson.]

Karl Lukens et. al report" "CMBO Sunset Walk at the "Meadows" - TNC. Great evening at the Meadows. Along with the usual array of waders, ducks and shorebirds, we had a couple of Blue-winged Teal, 4 Green-winged Teal, and the now famous 3 Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks. The latter appear to have moved over from Lighthouse Pond to the area by the west path bridge at the Meadows. Also at the bridge were 2 Soras that where enjoyed by all for as long as we wanted to stay. On the beach with many terns were Oystercatchers, Black Skimmers, the apparently one remaining Piping Plover fledgling that can probably leave any time it wants. Also on the beach were many Semi-palmated -Plovers and -Sandpipers, a Ruddy Turnstone and ,the hit of the night, a 1st year male and a female Yellow-headed Blackbird. Scope birds but Nice!! - Karl (Chuck, Mary Jane, Kathy, Roger, Mike H.)"

Back Bay Birding By Boat - Monday, August 16, 2010

"Migration is heating up in the back bays of Cape May County, as was evinced by the great birds and happy birders aboard The Osprey this monday morning. The highlight of the trip was the stellar view of a Marbled Godwit, with some folks getting nice shots of it with their cameras. Semipalmated Plovers were everywhere and Whimbrel seemed to be piling up as well. Another unexpected treat was a Caspian Tern sitting on the marsh, for many, a first for the fall."

"CMBO Morning Walk at "The Meadows" with Pete Dunne. Good waders, shorebirds, and beach birds this morning. Scoped Blue Grosbeak from the parking lot at the start. Cape May Point - Saturday, August 7, 2010

CMBO Birding Cape May Point Walk. Bunker Pond still continues as a prime birding area. Numerous waders - including Tricolored Heron - and shorebirds are present with an occasional specialty such as the two American Avocets on Thursday and the Marbled Godwits yesterday and this morning. Cedar Waxwings, Indigo Buntings and Orchard Orioles continue in the woods along the trail. We finished off the walk with the three continuing Black-bellied Whistling-ducks.

Great Egg Harbor Bay & Inlet - Thursday, August 12, 2010

"Albeit windy, the birds didn't mind and the Sunset Cruise on the Duke Of Fluke went off quite well. Black Skimmers were ubiquitous of course and a good number of Yellow-crowned Night Herons also showed themselves. The rookery was magical yet again and Bird Island held both Saltmarsh and Seaside Sparrows.

Bird Walk for All People - Cape May Point - Thursday, August 12, 2010

"Despite inclement weather, the Bird Walk for All People enjoyed good birding this morning. Bunker Pond still held its large army of egrets and herons, with a number of Glossy Ibis joining as well. A Stilt Sandpiper was a nice highlight as shorebird numbers continue to grow. A quick glance at Lighthouse Pond revealed the three Black-bellied Whistling-ducks, while a Peregrine Falcon flew by the lighthouse, giving some unsuspecting tourists at the top the view of a lifetime. South Cape May Meadows - Monday, August 02, 2010

Good waders and shorebirds this morning with Little Blue Heron and Snowy Egret in the same pond, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs feeding together and four fly-over Tricolored Herons. A perched Indigo Bunting and a fly-over Bank Swallow were also of interest. One of the few remaining Piping Plovers, a fledged chick, was admired by all.
