Butterfly Walk at Goshen - Thursday, August 16th, 2012
The weather for this Thursday's mid morning walk was delightful, and the butterflies put on a good display including a couple Salt Marsh Skippers. However, it was other critters who stole the show. Hummingbird moths were all over the place, and afforded us good looks at both species (Hummingbird Clearwing and Snowberry Clearwing). Also noteworthy was a large Black and Yellow Garden Spider with a Monarch in its web! Leaders: Nancy Watson and Mike Hannisian.
Bird Walk for All People - Thursday, August 16th, 2012
In addition to "regular" walkers, the Walk for All People hosted a Girl Scout group from Connecticut today. Highlights of the walk include Great Blue Herons, Great and Snowy Egrets, an immature Little Blue Heron, two families of American Oystercatchers, and four species of raptors -- Cooper's Hawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Broad-winged Hawk, and Osprey. Birding Cape May Point - Wednesday, August 15th, 2012
Lots of birds on Bunker Pond and the beach, so we spent the whole walk studying and enjoying them. Several of interest were the continuing juvenile Gull-billed Tern, several juvenile Common and Forster's Terns, and a juvenile and adult Black Tern. Two Little Blue Herons and a Snowy Egret provided a nice comparison. Also seen was the first of the year juvenile Short-billed Dowitcher, and a White-rumped Sandpiper. A perched and singing Blue Grosbeak provided a nice scope look. Leaders: Mike Crewe, Karl Lukens, Steve Weis, Mike Hannisian, and Chris Marks.

It soon became evident, though, that many breeding birds as well as early migrants are making use of this still-evolving (from a golf course) habitat. Photo Walks with Mike Hannisian - Saturday, August 11th, 2012
We were fortunate this Saturday in that the much needed rains held off until the afternoon. As expected, Bunker Pond had its share of terns with Forster's and Common predominating. Likewise, with the low water level, herons and egrets were present and offered nice photo opportunities. However, our first stop was to shoot a group of wasps on the end of a dead twig. I do not know what they were doing, but it was reminiscent of a group of males that have just found a fertile female. But the photo bird of the day was an adult Tree Swallow that posed for so long that it was still there when we left!

Birding Cape May Point - August 11th, 2012
Because it was quiet at the Rea Farm, we moved the Fall Migrants at the Rea Farm walk to Cape May Point State Park where we had lots of terns, waders and shorebirds to look at and study. Many scope views of 4 species of terns in both basic, alternate, and juvenile plumage, many times in one field of view. Nice close look at juvenile Little Blue Heron and just to make things interesting and scatter all the birds, a fly-over pass by a Peregrine Falcon and later a Cooper's Hawk. Impending rain never materialized, and we did have some nice shorebirds to view including both Yellowlegs, Stilt, Least and Semipalmated Sandpiper, and Semipalmated Plover. A fly-by Cooper's Hawk drew the attention of many birds. The beach contained at least 9 American Oystercatchers, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and numerous Royal Terns as well as a hundred plus Sanderling. Our first Saturday Photo Walk of the season was greeted with sunny if rather warm weather. Regardless, it is hard to complain about Cape May in August, and our walk was presented with a nice selection of photo subjects. Bunker Pond had, of course, its share of birds, including multiple immature Little Blue Herons along with omnipresent Forster's Terns. In addition, flowers were in bloom everywhere, as were a number of dragonflies including striking male Halloween Pennants and Needham's Skimmers. The 7-day forecast suggests that next Saturday may be even better!

Three juvenile Little Blue Herons gave us good, close looks as did a very cooperative Stilt Sandpiper. Birding Cape May Point - Wednesday, August 1st, 2012
It was easy to get hung up at Bunker Pond this morning with all the waders, shorebirds and terns to keep us occupied. Good close looks at Gull-billed and Royal Terns as well as Short-billed Dowitcher, Stilt Sandpiper, and various "peeps". One highlight was a few minute visit by 5 Tricolored Herons. A juvenile Little Blue Heron was also in the mix. We also got both the "blue breeders" Indigo Bunting and Blue Grosbeak. Leaders: Mike Crewe, Karl Lukens, Chris Marks, Warren Cairo, Mike Hannisian, and Nancy Watson.
