Higbee Beach - Friday, May 6th, 2016

A rainy day prompted us to alter our usual approach to Higbee Beach. After a consulting with the group, we decided to go to Cape May Point State Park to see the very unusual-for-this-time-of-year, breeding plumage Snow Bunting which had been found the day before and was still present. From there, we toured the newly laid trail behind the Northwood Center to admire the Rose-breasted Grosbeaks who had been present all week on the feeders, and finally, returned to Higbee to take a walk around the first field and saw a perched Common Nighthawk! Leaders: David La Puma, Chris Marks and Catherine Busch.

Cox Hall Creek WMA - Sunday, May 1st, 2016

Red-headed Woodpeckers are always a pleasure to see and the Cox Hall Creek WMA is a fairly reliable place to see them, at least during most winters and through early spring. We had scope views on this morning's walk of a bird that's been around for the last few months, flashing it's wide white wing patches and showing off it's ruby head. We also encountered a great little mixed flock of Blue-winged, Yellow-rumped and Black-and-white Warblers, along with a Northern Parula, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers and a Blue-headed Vireo. Other warblers seen or heard included Common Yellow-throat, Yellow, Pine and Yellow-throated. Not a bad morning, despite the drizzle!

Bird Walk for All People - Saturday, April 30th, 2016

Partly cloudy and chilly spring afternoon. A highlight of the walk was watching an Osprey dive completely underwater, catch a fish, and shake water off his feathers like a dog. We saw nesting American Oystercatchers on the beach and Northern Gannet flying over the ocean. A Virginia Rail popped up by the platform on Lighthouse Pond East but was seen only by the leader. Warblers were not showing themselves but we heard a Common Yellowthroat. Ducks are mostly gone but we saw a Northern Pintail that appears to be injured on the middle plover pond. Leaders: Chuck Slugg & Barb Bassett.

Spring Migrants at The Rea Farm - Saturday, April 30th, 2016

It sounds as if there may be three pair of Prothonotary Warblers breeding at the Rea Farm this year, based on the three separate males we heard singing and caught brief glimpses of in wet woods areas. A Black-crowned Night-Heron was doing it's best to remain hidden but that didn't work so well once we got the scope on him. The Eastern Kingbird was a first-of-season for many of us and the pond provided great views of many Rough-winged and a few Barn Swallows feeding low over the water. Access to the Rea Farm is a privilege of membership so, Members, be sure to stop in at the Northwood Center and pick up your Rea Farm sticker - and Thank You! Leaders : Kathy Horn, Roger Horn, Karl Lukens, Kyle Chelius, and Michael McCabe.

Birding the Meadows with Pete Dunne - Monday, April 25th, 2016

The Willets are back with two pair hanging about probably looking for a nesting spot. Other shore birds seen were one Wilson's Snipe, two Semipalmated Sandpipers and six American Oystercatchers on the beach. Off shore there was one Northern Gannet, numerous Forster's Terns, and one Parasitic Jeager was also seen. A sub-adult Bald Eagle put on a show a chasing an Osprey with a fish and finally ended up catching the dropped fish. Cox Hall Creek WMA - Sunday, April 24th, 2016

The female Rose-breasted Grosbeak that showed up on this morning's walk was a first-of-season for many of us. Yellow-rumped Warblers are frequently singing now, as well as giving their flat chips. Other warblers included Black-and-white, Prairie, Palm and Pine. A Red-headed Woodpecker, presumably the one that overwintered here, perched briefly before flying off, displaying its striking white secondaries.  Leaders: Kathy Horn, Roger Horn, Shaun Bamford, Cindy Bamford, and Kyle Chelius.

Birds Of Belleplain - Saturday, April 23rd, 2016

An overcast day in Belleplain with a few drops of rain meant that many birds were heard and not seen. However, birds have migrated back and were singing well. Ovenbirds were everywhere as were White-eyed Vireos. The group got great looks at a Prothonotary Warbler. Leaders: Bert Hixon, Shaun Bamford, Chris Marks, and BJ Pinnock.

Spring Migrants at the Rea Farm - Saturday, April 23rd, 2016

Prothonotary Warblers are back at the Rea Farm and will hopefully stay there to breed. Two males were singing in two of the wet woods areas; they looked especially bright in the gray morning light. Formerly called "Golden Swamp Warblers," Prothonotaries are the only cavity nesting warblers in the East; the excellent habitat at the Rea Farm provides plenty of cavity choices. Cox Hall Creek WMA - Sunday, April 17th, 2016

With all the standing trees, both live and dead, at Cox Hall Creek WMA, cavity nesters are always present in good numbers. This includes not only chickadees and titmice, but several species of woodpeckers, such as Northern Flickers, and Red-bellied, Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers, all seen on today's walk. Wood Ducks are also cavity nesters and two flew close overhead, clearly showing their exquisitely "painted" faces and long, broad tails. This year, one of the cavity nests that housed Red-bellied Woodpeckers last year seems to be occupied by a family of squirrels; they look awfully cute when they peak out of their narrow tree cavity. Leaders: Kathy Horn, Roger Horn, Janet Crawford, and Cindy Bamford.

Spring Migrants at The Rea Farm - Saturday, April 16, 2016

"Wet woods" is an abundant habitat type at the Rea Farm and is preferred habitat for Prothonotary warblers (which should be in any day now), winter wrens, and waterthrush - none of which were seen or heard this morning. Rusty Blackbirds, however, are also wet woods birds and highly sought since their population has declined by 85% since 1966. They were at the Beanery this morning, in good view and calling. Though some Yellow-rumped Warblers spend the winter in Cape May, their numbers have increased of late and we often had stereo "Yump" chips surrounding us, as well as occasional songs. Leaders: Kathy Horn, Roger Horn, Karl Lukens, and Michael McCabe.

A Meadows Afternoon - Friday, April 16th, 2016

A very nice group of folks joined CMBO naturalists for the season's first installment of " A Meadows Afternoon." We enjoyed a number of swallows feeding low over the ponds, including a single Cliff Swallow and a bonus Chimney Swift. A dwindling collection of waterfowl remain on the ponds, and newly-arrived shorebird migrants included Greater Yellowlegs, Least Sandpiper, and Spotted Sandpiper. Passerine highlights included Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Brown Thrasher, and prolonged views of a singing Field Sparrow. Leaders: Gail Dwyer, Barb Bassett, Marc & Lynn Breslow, and Tom Reed.

Higbee Beach Bird Walk - Friday, April 15th, 2016

Generally the critter with the highest "Cuteness Factor" on spring birding walks is the piping plover. Not so today. Today's cuteness award definitely went to the harbor seal sunning itself atop some old pilings off Higbee Beach, checking us out with those big dark eyes as we checked him out from the shore. Early season migrants included Prairie Warbler, White-eyed Vireo, Purple Martin and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. Hermit Thrush numbers seem to be building as they move through headed for northern breeding grounds; now is the time to listen for their beautiful ethereal song. Leaders: Kathy Horn, Roger Horn, Catherine Busch, Chris Marks, and Steve Rodan.

Birding Cape May Point - Saturday, April 2nd, 2016

The birds and birders were undeterred by this morning's teeming rain. The Tundra Swan is still playing "Find the Different Swan" in the second plover pond, the Red-winged Blackbirds are perched up and singing. A couple of female Hooded Mergansers had their "hair" all slicked down by the rain and the Purple Martins - last week perched atop the empty martin house poles - now have the (newly replaced) martin houses to sit on. Birding Cape May Point - Saturday, March 26th, 2016

It was a nice surprise this morning to see two Purple Martins, first-of-season birds for most of us, perched on the poles that will soon hold the martin houses in which they’ll breed. Other early migrants included Rough-winged and Tree Swallow, Osprey and Laughing Gull. Northern Gannets were putting on a show over the water close to land and three male Blue-winged Teal, much less common here than Green-winged Teal, showed off their breeding finery. Birding Cape May Point - Saturday, March 12th, 2016

There was quite a cacophony in the State Park this morning, though not at all an unpleasant one. Following two days in the mid-70s, it was 46 degrees when we started out and felt much more like a March morning. But the birds 'know' the days are getting longer and they're busy singing, chasing and displaying. Ducks are on the move with 13 species seen today, including a lingering female Canvasback and some Blue-winged Teal. Red-winged Blackbirds are everywhere throughout the park, most visibly males sitting atop grasses, calling and displaying their brilliant wing patches, or epaulets. Leaders: Kathy Horn, Roger Horn, and Karl Lukens
