The parking lot was deceptively quiet at the start of this morning's Cox Hall Creek WMA walk. But 10 minutes down the trail, a flock of birds kept the group busy for almost an hour, identifying the birds in a large mixed flock. An Olive-sided Flycatcher sat atop a snag long enough for repeated scope views, as did a male Blue Grosbeak still in full breeding plumage. Warblers included Yellow-throated, Pine, Tenessee, Yellow and Common Yellowthroat. 53 species Canada Goose 7 Mallard 1 Great Blue Heron 1 Great Egret 3 Green Heron 1 Turkey Vulture 4 Osprey 1 Bald Eagle 1 Red-tailed Hawk 1 Laughing Gull 12 Royal Tern 1 Mourning Dove 9 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 9 Red-bellied Woodpecker 4 Downy Woodpecker 6 Northern Flicker (Yellow-shafted) 2 Olive-sided Flycatcher 1 Least Flycatcher 1 Eastern Phoebe 1 Great Crested Flycatcher 1 Eastern Kingbird 4 White-eyed Vireo 1 Red-eyed Vireo 2 Blue Jay 5 American Crow 7 Purple Martin 3 Tree Swallow 18 Barn Swallow 8 Carolina Chickadee 9 Tufted Titmouse 9 White-breasted Nuthatch 4 Carolina Wren 4 House Wren 3 Eastern Bluebird 17 American Robin 27 Gray Catbird 2 Northern Mockingbird 5 European Starling 45 Cedar Waxwing 35 Tennessee Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 3 Yellow Warbler 2 Pine Warbler 3 Yellow-throated Warbler 1 Chipping Sparrow 20 Song Sparrow 3 Northern Cardinal 6 Blue Grosbeak 6 Red-winged Blackbird 25 Common Grackle 2 Brown-headed Cowbird 13 House Finch 7 American Goldfinch 9 |
