Back Bay Birding by Boat on the Osprey - Sunday, May 30 2010

Dave Lord tells us:

"Sunday Morning's Back Bay Birding by Boat aboard the Osprey was a good trip to appreciate the transition from Migration to high breeding time. A beautiful adult Tricolored Heron put in an appearance, his white breeding plume still intact. Also appearing was an adult male Northern Harrier (grey ghost) and the last of the migrant shorebirds represented by Black-bellied Plover and Semipalmated Sandpipers. We'll keep an eye out for Osprey chicks on future tours."

Appalachian Bird Song Workshop, Day 2 - Saturday, May 29, 2010

100 species even were tabulated on this two day workshop, with great looks and great listening. Today's highlights included singing Winter Wren; excellent views of Hooded Warbler, Magnolia Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, sapsuckers, Scarlet Tanager, Yellow-throated Vireo, etc.; finishing our sweep of the breeding empids with an Alder at Van Ness Road and multiple cooperative Acadians in Stokes; flyover Broad-winged Hawks; hearing Chestnut-sided primary and alternate songs, Yellow, and Redstart all from one location at the same time; and the wonderful "mossy place" (Sawmill Hemlock Glen) and other great habitats in NJ's north.

Hidden Corners of Belleplain - Tuesday May 25th 2010

Dave Lord reports: "This morning's final Hidden Corners of Belleplain walk had many birds, most of which were hiding behind foliage. An odd Nashville Warbler sang a few times at the four corners, a few Acadian Flycatchers obliged us with good looks, and Yellow-billed Cuckoos teased us with vocalizations deep in the woods. A number of Worm-eating Warblers were heard, with only a few seen, and a good amount of Hooded Warblers were also present. The highlight of the walk was not even a bird: it was a beautiful Ebony Jewelwing damselfly showing off near the triangle."

Back Bay Birding by Boat on the Osprey - Monday, May 24 2010

"Today's Back Bay Birding by Boat was spectacular, with all the wonders of a salt marsh in May. A Clapper Rail sat out and preened for us, allowing everyone on the boat a chance to see it. Getting a boat with 30 people on it to see a Clapper Rail is not an everday feat. A Litttle Blue Heron flew over near the rookery, his blue being greatly accentuated by the gray sky, and Black-bellied Plovers did not fail to impress in their breeding finery. Some of the best birds were seen from the dock at Cape Island Creek preserve, as two Belted Kingfishers, male and female, flew by (missing until now) and a Black Skimmer fed right across the creek from where we tie up."

Cape May Point - Wednesday, May 26 2010

What a difference a week makes! Gone were pretty much all of the migrants - though two fly-over Green Herons and a singing Blackpoll Warbler were enjoyed - to be replaced by much breeding activity. Highlights included a fired-up House Wren near his nest box, a Yellow-breasted Chat and a pair of Orchard Orioles showing nesting behavior and at least two pairs of Cedar Waxwings carrying twigs into the pines. An Eastern Wood-pewee was calling as if on territory too.

Meadows Walk - Monday, May 24 2010

Foggy weather reduced visibility and bird movements, but we still enjoyed a nice range of birds, including some very close Semipalmated Sandpipers and Semipalmated Plovers, side-by-side comparison of Forster's and Common Terns and we worried for the Piping Plovers who put on a full distraction display to lure a Fish Crow away from their nest.

Cape May Point - Wednesday, May 19 2010

Sandwiched between World Series and Spring Weekend, it's been a hectic week, but the Wednesday Walk - despite threatening skies - took place as usual and a good time was had by all. Finding warblers in breezy conditions proved tricky, but both Yellow Warbler and Northern Parula actually sat long enough to give everyone great scope views. Piping Plovers on the Plover Pools gave great photo opportunities for some and Least Terns hovered in the air before us like little angels. What a way to start a working day!

Back Bay Birding by Boat on the Osprey - Monday, May 17 2010

Dave Lord reports:

"The Back Bays of Cape May are alive with activity, as Monday morning's Back Bay Birding by Boat cruise on the Osprey could attest to. Great movements of Whimbrel were witnesed, as were the large pushes of Black-Bellied Plover, most of which were in their breeding plumes. Seaside Sparrows were had at a local colony, and many Oystercatchers were seen to do their courtship displays. In the afternoon, a Black Scoter was seen, along with a Black Skimmer. Multipule Yellow Crowned Night Herons were being very showy as well."

Higbee Beach - Friday, May 14 2010

CMBO Walk at Higbee Beach. Cloudy and rather cool in the early morning made the warblers less active. Small pockets were found but seeing them was a struggle - though some of us did see a nice Canada Warbler. However we did manage to see both Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, hear a Scarlet Tanager, see and hear Least Flycatcher, and see both the Blue Two -  Blue Grosbeak and Indigo Bunting.

Birding Cumberland County - Wednesday, May 12 2010

The Birding Cumberland County walk turned up a nice total of birds - here's Dave Lord's report:

Wednesday's Birding Cumberland garnered 71 species all told, most of which gave us good looks. A Scarlet Tanager on James Moore road gave us a nice view, a lifer for one participant, while two Yellow-breasted Chats showed off, as did a Prairie Warbler. Hansey Creek Road yielded a nice Yellow-throated Warbler (feeling a bit blue with all these migrants stealing his thunder), and a wondeful array of shorebirds and orioles. The migrant corner had a Blackpoll Warbler singing, which capped off a very good day of birding.

Cape May Point - Wednesday, May 12 2010

Wednesday morning around Cape May Point State Park started how it finished - with plenty of shorebirds to enjoy. Actually, to start with, it was all a little crazy, as we homed in on a bunch of shorebirds arriving across the bay and giving us mere silhouettes to work with - the leader could have told us anything!! We finished with some great scope views of Least, Spotted and Semipalmated Sandpipers and Piping Plovers. In between all the shorebird fun, we found a nice selection of other birds, highlights including a singing male Yellow-breasted Chat, a sparkling male Scarlet Tanager and the nice find of a Gray-cheeked Thrush - though he was very elusive sadly.

Meadows Walk - Monday, May 10 2010

Karl Lukens reports:

CMBO Morning Walk at the Meadows with Pete Dunne and the Gang was cold and very windy but still gave us some nice birding. lots of ibis and shorebirds, including one White-rumped Sandpiper, flying about and landing. Fun to watch a Bald Eagle "sparring" with an Osprey. A group of Bonaparte's Gulls close to shore was interesting. Other notable birds were a Blue Grosbeak fly-by, a Great Crested Flycatcher and a Bank Swallow.

Back Bay Birding By Boat - Monday, May 10 2010

Dave Lord reports: Monday morning's Back Bay Birding by Boat tour was fabulous, as any birding day in May should be. Many large flocks of Whimbrel flew by, many of which called, and Short-billed Dowitchers passed by overhead. Black-bellied Plovers were numerous and beautiful, and a fly-by Cliff Swallow was seen briefly. The biggest thriller of all would have to be the ruckus started when a Red-tailed Hawk flew through the Sunset Lake rookery. The Black-crowned Night Herons, Snowy Egrets and Great Egrets scattered like mad, flying about the area for over an hour. An adult Yellow-Crowned Night Heron got a delayed message and flew out later.

Birds of Belleplain - Thursday, May 6 2010

Dave Lord et. al. report:

"Thursday Morning's Birds of Belleplain was extraordinary, as we got on a good number of birds, even with all the foliage out. The Acadian Flycatcher showed his camouflage very well at the four corners, a male Orchard Oriole popped up and sang at the concession stand as soon as we were going to walk away, and the Hooded Warbler was glimpsed briefly before heading out. The bird which won the most ooo's and ahhh's would have to be the Prothonatary Warbler, and it wasn't even a male. The female gleaned bugs, and gave us quite a show, and even ate right in front of us at the beaver dam. We finished up this fine morning with a good number of Orchard Orioles chasing each other around on Kubiak Road, while a Baltimore chimed in once or twice."

Turkey Point Chucks, Whips and Rails May 1-2 + Back Bay Birding by Boat May 2

Dave Lord reports:

"Both of CMBO's inaugural "Chuck's, Whips and Rails" field trips went very well. Highlights of both days include the Virginia Rail displaying, a first for many, the Whip-poor-wills calling in stereo, and the amazing number of Clapper Rails and Seaside Sparrows that were seen. On Sunday, we had two adult Bald Eagles in a tree, which on our second walk by the spot, said tree was occupied by two Great Horned Owls, with another across the way. An American Bittern flew past, and plenty of the songbird breeders of the bayshore kept all entranced for these neat trips."

"The Sunday morning "Back Bay Birding by Boat" tour aboard the Osprey was a wonderful time, as shorebirds are starting to increase in number and beauty. Hundreds of Dunlin lined the Salt Marsh, while many Black-Bellied Plovers, Short-Billed Dowitchers and other sandpipers stood out. A good number of Whimbrel were had, there were more breeding plumage Common Loons to gawk at, and the male Harlequin Duck is still to be found in the inapropriate habitat near Two-Mile Resturaunt. The highlight of the trip would have to be the three very co-operative Yellow-Crowned Night Herons at the heron island, with a Tri-Colored Heron circling overhead."

Beanery - Saturday, May 1 2010

[Karl Lukens got this neat shot of the two vultures at the Beanery on Saturday.]

Karl Lukens et. al. report:

"CMBO Spring Migrants at the Rea Farm - "The Beanery". Not as "birdy" as yesterday but we did have 7 fly-over Common Loons, a sharp looking male Kestrel, a fly-over Red-headed Woodpecker, 2 FOS Great Crested Flycatchers (heard), 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers nest building along the back Rail Road ,where we also had excellent looks at a singing Prothonotary Warbler. Also had singing Northern Waterthrush, a couple of Indigo Bunting, and scope looks at Blue Grosbeak. A singing adult male Orchard Oriole was also a treat. A Black and Turkey Vulture sat side by side providing a good comparison. - Karl (Kathy, Roger, Warren, Patty) "
