After a couple of days of rain, it was nice to get back out in the field again and, despite a keen and chilly north-west wind, we had a pleasant two-hour walk around Cape May Point and the State Park.
An early look at the bay revealed an impressive passage of adult Northern Gannets - impressive because so many were close in and gave great views. Black Scoter, Red-breasted Merganser and Red-throated Loon were all on the water. A loop around the Red Trail boardwalk was windy but gave us a nice array of ducks (including the lingering male Eurasian Wigeon) and a Raccoon pottering around out in the open.
We concluded our walk with a turn around the block in Cape May Point, where participants from Maine and Massachusetts enjoyed getting good looks at Carolina Chickadees, and we focused on distinguishing Fish Crows from American Crows by their silly calls! Walking back to the parking lot, Warren spotted two River Otters in Lighthouse Pond which gave us all great scope views as they fed on some very unfortunate fish.

"The final 'Nightfall at Corbin City' went swimmingly on this fine Sunday evening. A mass of piping and quacking Green-Winged Teals was enjoyed by all, as was the pair of Blue-Winged Teal mixed in. A close fourth year Bald Eagle and a distant mature Bald Eagle gave us our daily quota of Eagles, and Great Horned Owls, Barred Owls, Red Bats were also seen. One of the true highlights would have to be the deafening cacophany of frogs calling toward the end of the dikes, as the Wood Frog, Spring Peepers and Chorus Frogs bid goodbye to the Corbin City walks. Karen Johnson, Janet Crawford, BJ Pinnock, and Dave Lord led."

"The first annual Bald Eagle cruise on the Maurice River aboard the Osprey produced a varied assortment of natural wonders. Five Bald Eagles were seen on the trip, as well as eight Ospreys, with many on nests. Great Blue Herons and Green Winged Teal put in an appearance, as did a Red-Tail Hawk that was patrolling an abandoned dike farm for lunch. - Dave Lord with Captain Dave Githens."

"CMBO Evening Walk at the Meadows-TNC. A beautiful evening and good waterbirds. Drake Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal in the same scope field was nice. Singing Red-winged Blackbirds and a Northern Harrier were also enjoyed by all. Deep standing water beyond the dunes prevented us from going out on the beach. - Karl, Chuck, Mary Jane, Roger, Marc, Lynne."

"The well attended Sunday Morning at Turkey Point began with a blustery 35 degree wind that made the bridge a bit cold. The usually productive road end was quiet, with only a few harriers and a Peregrine alone to brighten things up, so we all braved the rather mucky Bald Eagle Trail. A good thing too, because it yielded great looks at mature Bald Eagles, Green-Winged Teal, and Northern Pintails. We all enjoyed a look at a coyote den, and an Eastern Comma butterfly, one that overwinters as an adult, put in an appearance - the first butterfly of the season for many observers. Red-tailed Hawk copulation was observed at Beaver Dam, and we found an immature Golden Eagle fighting with a Bald. This was a different bird than the adult which has been seen. We finished up with a pre-breakfast Dark Morph Rough-Legged Hawk at Newport Landing. Dave Lord (Karen, Brian, Janet, Tony)"

After an informative lecture and powerpoint put on by Karen Johnson and Janet Crawford, the group headed to Kimble's Beach Road where the woodcocks gave us a great show despite the winds. 7 Woodcocks were heard peenting, and three gave us very intimate views as they flew around. Karen Johnson, Janet Crawford, Chuck + Mary Jane Slugg, and Dave Lord led."

Wigeon, Mallards, Shovelers, and a few Hooded Mergansers and Gadwall. The Black Scoters are close in around the point and giving their mournful call. Raptors were lead by 8 Red-tailed Hawks, a Red-shoulder, and a Sharp-shinned Hawk, with numerous Black and Turkey Vultures. Usual passerine subjects including good looks at Fox Sparrows. -Karl (Chuck, Mary Jane, Kathy, Roger, Steve, David, Tom)"

"With a hardly auspicious beginning, namely snow, the Turkey Point yielded great birds. Three Short-Eared Owls were seen flying around the Peregrine hacking tower, and the Peregrine even visited the tower when a Short-Eared was flying by. We had five Bald Eagles without leaving the road end, and two Red-Tailed Hakws were seen mixing it up with one Eagle that came too close. The Harriers put in a nice showing after last weeks sparser numbers, and the Snow Geese Movement was terrific. - Dave Lord."

"With a hardly auspicious beginning, namely snow, the Turkey Point yielded great birds. Three Short-Eared Owls were seen flying around the Peregrine hacking tower, and the Peregrine even visited the tower when a Short-Eared was flying by. We had five Bald Eagles without leaving the road end, and two Red-Tailed Hakws were seen mixing it up with one Eagle that came too close. The Harriers put in a nice showing after last weeks sparser numbers, and the Snow Geese Movement was terrific. - Dave Lord."
