There was an incredible flight of hawks today making it difficult to leave the parking lot, especially when the walk started off with the Rough-legged Hawk giving us killer views as it circled overhead. This was presumably the same bird that had been trapped, banded, and released the day before. Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks were frequently in view as we progressed around the park, and the variety and numbers of ducks is increasing. Leaders: Catherine Busch, Chris Marks, Lynne and Marc Breslow.

Above Par Birding at Cox Hall Creek WMA - Sunday, October 15th, 2017
With ten species of warblers and six species of sparrows, it sure seemed like fall, despite the summery temperatures. Two White-crowned Sparrows were among the many Palm Warblers and Ruby-crowned Kinglets in the brushy fields and a first-of-season Junco was seen, along with Brown Creeper and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.

Fall Migrants at the Rea Farm - Saturday, October 14th, 2017
Beautiful in their deep gray-blue and rust even on such an overcast morning, Swamp Sparrows were everywhere at the Beanery this morning, more common even than the Yellow-rumped Warblers that constantly chipped around us. White-throated Sparrows are also back and the far hedgerow held Savannah Sparrows and a first-winter White-crowned Sparrow. Mixed warbler flocks seemed to be hanging around the wet woods areas and a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak perched briefly for some of us to view.

A Meadows Afternoon - Friday, October 13th, 2017
We had a great Merlin show. Also, after being patient, the participants saw the Common Gallinule and Sora. The Virginia Rail called frequently but never showed. On the beach, several species of gulls and terns were spotted. Many scoter flew by and there was one Semipalmated Plover and a couple of Sanderlings. The ponds held a nice variety of ducks. Birding the Meadows - Monday, October 9th, 2017
Cloudy, breezy, and threatening rain. Passerines were hard to come by, but some nice varieties of ducks including both Teal, American Wigeon, Gadwall, Black Duck, Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler, and Mallard. Lots of gulls on the beach as well as at least 12 Royal Terns. A Little Blue Heron was feeding in the east pond. A Sora and a Virginia Rail were either seen or heard by many in the group. Leaders: Pete Dunne, Chuck Slugg, Karl Lukens, Steve Weis, Mary Watkins, Marc & Lynne Breslow.

Above Par Birding at Cox Hall Creek - Sunday, October 1st, 2017
Sometimes, a few days after a favorable migration front that drops a lot of birds at Cape May's tip, birds settle in to feed for a few days a bit further up the bayshore, making Cox Hall Creek WMA the place to be. That seemed to be the case today, with eleven species of warblers, many kinglets and a variety of vireos. One of the Blue-headed Vireos was especially kind to us, posing in good light as we admired its fine plumage. Leaders: Kathy Horn, Roger Horn, Janet Crawford, Cindy Bamford, Deb Payson, & Joe Demko.

Fall Migrants at the Rea Farm - Saturday, September 30th, 2017
During migration, you really need eyes in the back of your head, and eyes on top of your head. On a day like today, if you took your eyes off the sky, you'd miss a falcon or an accipiter. If you took your eyes off the shrubs, you'd miss the flit of a kinglet or a warbler. These are days that make us glad we're birders!

Twilight Watch at The Meadows - Wednesday, September 27th, 2017
A beautiful evening at the Meadows, ‘So Many Merlin’s’. Yes, tonight was clearly a falcon evening, Merlins flying around us almost continuously only to be interrupted by a Peregrine or two. At the dune crossing they were flying by within twenty feet of us. All those falcons and a beautiful sunset. Another great evening in Cape May! Leaders: Warren Cairo, Bill Smythe.

Sunset Birding at Stone Harbor Point - Tuesday, September 26th, 2017
A very windy evening at Stone Harbor Point tonight but lots of interesting birds. We began with a very large group of American Oystercatchers and a lone Red Knot. Then a very large flock of shorebirds were put to flight further up the beach. They circled around and around and finally settled down right in front of us providing great looks at Western Sandpipers and Semipalmated Plovers. On the return from the beach, while searching out Savannah Sparrows, we were buzzed by a very low flying Peregrine Falcon. A fun night. Leaders: Shaun Bamford, Warren Cairo, Michael McCabe and Chris & Gerry Dewaghe.
