As Winter fades into Spring, Cape May birds are on the move. Our duck numbers are down though a nice variety remains. Osprey numbers are slowly increasing, and Red-winged Blackbirds are vigorously singing, but our winter White-throated Sparrows and Red-breasted Nuthatches are still here. One nice surprise on this morning's walk was the call of the Virginia Rail, in the same spot as last weekend.

Birding Cape May Point - Saturday, March 16th, 2019

Despite a stream of Northern Gannets headed out of the bay, close Field Sparrows sitting up and singing, and good, long looks at a Hermit Thrush, the real stars of this mornings walk were birds we heard but never saw. As we paused to scan a marshy area along the red trail, a Virginia Rail called, loud and close, seemingly startled by our presence. After mimicking its call, it returned the call but despite diligent searching we couldn't see the bird. A few minutes later we turned to go but got only a short ways before two Virginia Rails sounded off. We never did see them but it's exciting to know they're there!

It wasn't the cacophony of a spring dawn chorus this morning as we headed out across the Park but neither was it the stillness of winter. Red-winged Blackbirds are practicing the songs and whistles they'll use to defend their territories, American Wigeon are giving their wheezing whistles on the ponds, Northern Cardinals were in full-throated song, and killdeer "deered" from the parking lot. Most weeks in winter we make a stop there during the Saturday morning walk. Today two Carolina Wrens, often such skulkers, were perched on top if it, heads thrown back and throats visibly vibrating, singing loudly as only Carolina Wrens can. Seven White-throated Sparrows arranged themselves on the limbs below, looking for all the world like an appreciative audience.

Gannets are very large seabirds that only come to land to breed on rocky cliffs and islands. Most of those we saw today were adults, with long black-tipped white wings, flying in long, arced glides over the water. Lighthouse Pond still holds many overwintering ducks, including a single canvasback today. Berries aren't as plentiful as they were earlier in the season, but a flock of Cedar Waxwings landed directly overhead, in search of fruit remaining on the holly and cedars.
