Spring Birding at the Garrett Family Preserve - Saturday, April 27, 2019

Despite the wind and chill, birds were singing this morning at Garrett. This was our first walk of the season here. The Ospreys are back on the marsh, two perched on the platform visible from the blind. An Orchard Oriole was a first-of-season bird for most of us. Multiple Common Yellowthroats were singing but were really hunkered down, out of sight. The Chimney Swifts though, despite their diminutive size, seemed to revel in the blustery weather.

Higbee Beach Birding - Friday, April 26, 2019

Indigo Buntings are birds we always wait for, then savor their return when they finally show up. And show up they did for this morning's walk, with five of these brilliantly blue birds feeding in the grasses at the edge of the field, then flying up for good looks as they perched. A small migratory flock contained a Blue-headed Vireo,Black-and-white, Palm, Hooded and Yellow-rumped Warblers; a Common Yellowthroat and a couple of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers seemed to be settling in for the season. Our timing was especially good, with the thunder and lightning holding off 'til we'd returned to the parking lot!

A singing Prairie Warbler, a Great-crested Flycatcher, two Spotted Sandpipers, three Green Herons and a Blue-headed Vireo were first-of-season birds for most of us on today's walk.
