A great wlak this morning as we started off with busy parties of shorebirds heading out across the bay and several parties of Glossy Ibis completed circuits around the lighthouse. Eight Stilt Sandpipers was a nice count, while the Gadwall count remains high thanks to a couple of broods of youngsters which are still doing well.

Marvin the Muskrat was busy ferrying food to his favorite feeding spot this morning!

Least Sandpipers are back and feeding unobtrusively along the muddy margins of Bunker Pond.

Adult Lesser Yellowlegs at Bunker Pond today. It's prime time now to get to know the two yellowlegs species in adult plumage, before they get too far into their post-breeding molt. Note the lack of flank barring and the relatively delicate and straight bill of this individual.

This Snowy Egret decided it was time to shift the terns out of the way and have a bit of a clean-up on the Bunker Pond railing. [Photos by Karl Lukens]

Photo Walk - Saturday July 16th 2011

Today's Photo Walk provided a change from what had become the norm as we predominantly shot butterflies, damselflies and dragonflies. Most images were created along the south side of Bunker Pond with the others created along the southeast side of Lake Lily. What was nice was that at least some of the bugs perched in situations that gave us separation between them and the backgrounds.

Here Be Dragons!!

Our first-ever dragonfly workshop on Thursday proved to be a great success, with both the weather and the dragonflies themselves behaving admirably! The previous few days had seen an impressive arrival of immigrant dragonflies from the south, so we started down the point, surrounded by Spot-winged Gliders and Migrant Hawkers - two of the latter even hung themselves up in a bush for us to get super close views of. Bunker Pond and - shortly after - Lake Lily gave us great opportunities to enjoy a wide range of generalist species which do well in the rather poor wetland habitats at the point and there was a clear difference in appearance between the non-breeding, duller individuals in the state park and the smart, colorful individuals inhabiting more suitable breeding conditions at Lake Lily. Halloween Pennant, Eastern Amberwing and the diminutive Rambur's Forktail were all enjoyed and we saw at least six individuals of Four-spotted Pennant, a species that is rare in New Jersey, being confined to just a handful of sites in Cape May and Cumberland counties.

Heading north, we next visited some old sand pits near Lizard-tail Swamp. The different waters here gave us a suite of different species with Seaside Dragonlets being plentiful in all their various color forms and we restled with the problems of identifying some of the bluets. A nice find was a freshly emerged, as yet unidentifiable, damselfly, still drying its wings beside its now-abandoned nymphal case or exuvia. After a slideshow to recap some of the identification points and to look closer at the ecology of dragonflies, we finished the day with a visit to Tarkiln Bog. Lilypad Forktails were the stars here and we also chanced upon a Dragonhunter - a chunky brute that eats other dragonfly species!

Photo Walk - Saturday July 9th 2011

We were fortunate in that the heavy rain of Friday night ended just before the walk began. We again spent most of our time on the beach where we saw and shot American Oystercatcher and Least Tern chicks. Unfortunately, the former included an individual with nasty growths above its left eye and on its right wing reminding us that nature, for all its wonders, is not particularly sympathetic to the world's inhabitants. We also saw a classic non-breeding plumaged Forster's Tern, a fishing Great Egret, and a female Rambur's Forktail in the Bunker Pond area.
