Fall Migrants at the Rea Farm - Saturday, September 28th, 2013

Seemed like the day of American Kestrel and Blue Jay, with both overhead or perched most of the time. Merlins were also present with Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks, and one adult Bald Eagle. Warblers were scarce with a few Common Yellowthroats, a couple of American Redstarts, and Yellow-rumped Warblers. We did have a nice close look at a vocal Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Photo Walks with Mike Hannisian - Saturday, September 21st, 2013

Late September in Cape May. A cold front is all that is needed for a great nature experience. However, today was the day before a front, so you might think that there would be nothing of interest to photograph. WRONG! After all, this is Cape May and a nice variety of subjects presented themselves. Given that it was two days after the full moon, that was our first subject. As has been the case in recent weeks, we also had dragonflies, such as Blue Dasher; damselflies, such as Rambur's Forktail; and butterflies, such as Common Buckeye. But it was the waders that stole the day this week. The Plover Ponds had multiple Great Egrets and the Yellow Trail produced a group of 25 Snowy Egrets and three hatching year Glossy Ibis. With at least one front likely before next Saturday, our next photo walk will almost certainly be very interesting.

Higbee Beach Birding - Saturday, September 20th, 2013

Higbee Beach was quiet this morning after another night of southernly winds. However, we were able to find a few pockets of activity and ended up with ten types of warblers. Flyover Rose-breasted Grosbeak and Common Nighthawk were also appreciated by all. Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Red-eyed Vireo were also seen. Birding Cape May Point - Wednesday, September 18th, 2013

This morning we worked the beach, dunes, and ponds, and found numerous passerines as well as the usual Terns and Gulls. Four Caspian Terns flew over giving their raucous call. There were many Yellow Warblers in the various shrubs, and we did manage some Palms and and a Cape May Warbler. A Least Flycatcher was also in the mix. We also encountered one Greater and one Lesser Yellowlegs, feeding next to each other, for a good comparison in appearance and behavior. Photo Walks with Mike Hannisian - Saturday, September 14th, 2013

It's mid-September at Cape May and the variety of viewing and photographic subjects is amazing (unless, of course, you already know about Cape May!). Among the dragonflies that posed for us this weekend were male Black Saddlebags and Blue Dasher as well as a strange female Carolina Saddlebags with a bent abdomen. Among the butterflies that posed for us were American Copper and Gray Hairstreak. Finally, among the birds that posed were Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Great Egret, and first year Little Blue Heron. Given the time of year, one can only expect things to get even better between now and the Cape May Autumn Festival in late October.

Fall Migrants at the Rea Farm - Saturday, September 14th, 2013

Cool morning with Northerly winds and pockets of birds here and there. Two Yellow-billed Cuckoos were seen from the parking lot to start off. American Redstarts, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, and Red-eyed Vireos were most numerous with several other single species seen. Raptors included four Bald Eagles, several Red-tailed Hawks, two Cooper's, five Broad-winged Hawks, three American Kestrels, and a Merlin. We also saw a female Scarlet Tanager and the highlight was an Olive-sided Flycatcher that unfortunately flew off before all could get on it.
