Butterfly and Dragonfly Walk - Sunday, September 7, 2014

The walk took place in the Cape May Point environs walking from the State Park through the neighborhood to Lily Lake. Sachems abounded on the giant sunflowers and zinnias. We were able to observe a number of monarch butterflies and, according to the Monarch project technicians, Lindsey Brendel and Angela Demarse, the numbers are up from last year. A few tagged individuals were observed as well as some caterpillars and eggs. Triangle Park allowed us to compare Painted Lady and American Lady Butterflies. Dragonflies were also seen throughout the route, including Rambur’s Forktails, Fragile Forktails and many Wandering Gliders. Lily Lake provided wonderful looks at Halloween Pennants in tandem and Blue Dashers. Black and Red Saddlebag Dragonflies were also numerous. Leaders: Mike Crewe, Chris Marks, and Catherine Busch with Monarch Project Technicians Lindsey Brendel and Angela Demarse.
