Fall Migrants at the Rea Farm - Saturday, August 9th, 2014

"When should we start the Beanery walks? The State Park can still be so good at this time of year." This is the kind of discussion you'd hear if you attended the quarterly meetings of the CMBO Volunteers' group as we try to plan on the best places to bring people on our walks each season. We again had that discussion as we started this morning's first-of-season walk at the Beanery since it seemed a little quiet. But as we rounded the corner at the back of the willow pond, the boldly marked face of a Lark Sparrow was seen perched on a snag. We got this rare fall migrant in the scopes before he flew across the field and out of sight. The rest of the walk turned out to be pretty good, too - several singing Blue Grosbeaks and Indigo Buntings, a couple American Redstarts, Yellow Warblers and a Black-and-White Warbler and the finale -- a Great-Horned Owl that flew out of the wet woods in front of us as we came down the path. Leaders: Kathy & Roger Horn, Karl Lukens, and Michael McCabe.
